Hunger Games

Hunger Games was an interesting book to say the least. For whatever reason, I really felt like it was taking me forever to get into it. I just felt like much of the book, especially the beginning parts, seemed very predictable. Even though this book was one of the easier ones we've read so far, it took me longer overall, because I couldn't seem to get interested in the storyline for quite a bit. I think it was about halfway through the section on the games itself where I started wondering what would happen. By the end, I was actually interested in the characters and everything going on with them, and then it had a bit of a cliffhanger ending. It was like, "Oh look, Katniss and Peeta both are winners and are going home to District 12, what's going to happen now?? THE END". It was a very creative ending though given that this book is a part of a trilogy, it makes the reader want to read the other books to see what happens. So basically, I started out hating the book for the most part, but then it grew on me, and I'm now actually interested in maybe even reading the other books to see what happens to Katniss and Peeta. This book reminded me the most of 1984. People always seemed to be watching the characters, especially in the arena, and the characters acted accordingly.

I thought it was interesting to see that they're making a movie out of this book. I gotta say, the whole idea of the "games" didn't really surprise me. I've read multiple books or seen movies that follow kinda the same story. Things like Battle Royale, "The Lottery" that we read in class, and also the movie Death Race. Here's a clip from Death Race:

  1. I agree, Death Race is a good example of what the "games" are like in the book. I'm surprised you didn't get into the book till half way through the games. It is predictable at times, but also suspenseful. I hated the cliffhanger, I just wanted to know what happened between them, but your right they leave it like that so you have to read the next book. I'm hoping the movie can live up to the book!

  2. I related my blog to Death Race as well, I didn't even read your blog before (I guess I should have). But when I saw this movie I instantly thought of the Hunger Games as well. It took me about 50 pages to get into the book, but I ended up really enjoying it.

  3. The second half of the book was definitely more enjoyable at least for me. I know the first half was just setup so it couldn't of been that exciting but I just wanted to see how the games were going to go down. I guess another comparison to the hunger games could be made with the stellar movie "Gamer" it is essentially the same concept of death race but instead of racing to the death they just shoot at each other.

  4. In "Gamer" the guy also tries to escape his reality. Katniss does the same thing. To break free of the Capitals control.

Death Race is a little shaky in comparison in the long run I guess. Since the guy has to finish X amount of races that are small and short where as the tributes have to endure long stretches of time or team up if they so choose. Which, on a side note is fun for the audience because when it comes time for that group to turn on each other or an alliance to be broken, who is going to kill the other first and when?! >:)
